pilgrimage itinerary

Today’s Theme: Grounding & Intention-Setting

Your journey begins the moment you arrive in Provence. Whether flying into Marseille Airport or arriving by high-speed train at Avignon or Aix-en-Provence, we’ll greet you with included private transport and whisk you through scenic countryside to the radiant village of Roussillon—a place where ochre cliffs, golden light, and silence begin to shift something inside.

Check into your boutique hotel, take time to unpack, breathe, and gently arrive. This day is intentionally spacious, allowing you to ground your body, quiet your mind, and begin listening inward.

In the late afternoon, we’ll gather for our opening circle, the ceremonial beginning of our sacred week together. Here, we’ll set intentions, share the spirit of the journey, and offer gratitude for the path that brought us to this moment. Later, gather for a delicious welcome dinner featuring seasonal Provençal cuisine, either in a local bistro or under the stars—where glasses clink and conversation flows gently, and the magic of the Luberon begins to settle into your bones.

Today’s Highlights

  • Included transport from Marseille Airport, Avignon TGV, or Aix TGV to Roussillon
  • Check-in & rest at your hotel in Roussillon

Today’s Theme: Crossing the Threshold
Walking Distance: ~14 km / Moderate

After breakfast under the soft Provençal light, we’ll take a short meditative walk through the Sentier des Ocres, where cliffs of rust and flame seem to pulse with memory. Once revered for their mineral healing qualities, these earth formations invite us to slow down, touch the sacred in the soil, and leave behind what we no longer wish to carry.

Then we begin our first full day of walking—stepping gently but deliberately across the threshold from ordinary time into sacred time. The trail leads us away from the fiery cliffs of Roussillon and into the undulating rhythm of the Luberon countryside, with its patchwork of vineyards, olive groves, and lavender fields whispering stories of the ancient earth.

As we walk, we’ll practice intentional silence for a portion of the morning—offering space for each step to become a prayer, each breath a homecoming. Along the way, we may pause to journal or reflect at small chapels, dry stone shepherd huts, or shaded groves, allowing nature to reveal her quiet wisdom.

By late afternoon, we arrive in the medieval village of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley. This lesser-known gem carries a stillness that feels both grounding and otherworldly. We’ll explore the evocative ruins of a centuries-old château and the hilltop chapel, where legend says pilgrims once heard the wind speak truths they couldn’t find elsewhere.

After settling into your accommodations, the evening is yours to unwind: enjoy a glass of local rosé, wander the cobbled streets, or simply sit in the hush of dusk as the sky shifts from gold to violet.

  • Arrival in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt and visit to the hilltop ruins & chapel

Today’s Theme: Following the Whisper Within
Walking Distance: ~15 km / Moderate

Today’s journey invites you into the wilder corners of the Luberon, where the terrain shifts gently between woodland paths, dry stone walls, and ancient shepherd trails. After breakfast in Saint-Saturnin, we’ll begin our walk through the quiet countryside toward the village of Villars, a little-known haven where natural springs and stillness reign.

As we pass through olive groves and open fields, you’ll have space to walk both with the group and in solitude. A guided prompt this morning invites you to reflect on the question: What within me longs to be heard? Throughout the walk, we’ll pause in intentional spaces—under a tree, beside a stream, or overlooking a valley—to let those inner voices rise.

In Villars, we’ll enjoy a restful pause—a chance to journal, eat a light lunch, or simply feel the silence that this small village naturally holds. Those who wish may visit the local spring, once believed to have healing properties by early Provençal herbalists.

From Villars, we continue toward Joucas, a peaceful and lesser-known hilltop village with a creative soul. Sculptures line the pathways, and art lives quietly in its stones. On arrival, we’ll check into our serene accommodations with time to rest, refresh, and enjoy the landscape.

In the early evening, we’ll gather in a quiet garden or terrace for a gentle breathwork or sound meditation session—allowing the nervous system to soften and the spirit to settle into a deeper space of listening.

Today’s Highlights

  • Morning departure from Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt
  • Walk through the countryside to Villars
  • Visit to the spring and reflective journaling stop
  • Arrival in the tranquil village of Joucas

Today’s Theme: Sacred Silence & Receiving the Unknown
Walking Distance: ~13–14 km / Moderate with elevation gain

This morning begins in quiet. After a nourishing breakfast, we depart Joucas in intentional silence, allowing our footsteps and breath to become a form of moving meditation. The trail carries us through fragrant pine forests and shaded ravines, the path narrowing as we descend into one of Provence’s most spiritually charged valleys.

Midway through the day, we arrive at the extraordinary Abbaye de Sénanque, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery still active with a small community of monks who live in devotion and prayer. Nestled in a field of lavender and stone, this sacred site invites us into a deeper internal space. We’ll take time here not as tourists, but as pilgrims—entering the abbey gardens or chapel in silence, absorbing the stillness, and remembering that silence is its own form of prayer.

After this inward pause, we gently ascend the hillside toward Gordes, one of the most iconic villages in Provence. With its honey-colored stone homes cascading down the cliffside, Gordes is both elegant and powerful—a place where beauty humbles and uplifts in equal measure.

Upon arrival, we check into our beautiful accommodations and are invited to take the afternoon slowly—enjoy a café terrace, journal in solitude, or wander the cobbled alleys to admire the interplay of shadow, stone, and sky.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a group reflection circle, sharing any emotions or insights that arose from the day’s silent walk and abbey visit. The circle may be followed by an optional group dinner at a restaurant known for its farm-to-table Provençal fare.

Today’s Highlights

  • Silent morning departure from Joucas
  • Sacred visit to Sénanque Abbey
  • Arrival in Gordes, one of France’s most beautiful villages
  • Optional group reflection & dinner

Today’s Theme: Integration & Earth Wisdom
Walking Distance: ~16 km / Moderate with steady climbs

After breakfast in the perched village of Gordes, we begin our descent through sun-kissed valleys and terraced groves, the air scented with rosemary, pine, and thyme. The land here feels wise—each step seems to echo with footsteps of travelers and pilgrims before us.

By late morning, we arrive in Goult, a soulful village known not only for its beauty but for its subtle spiritual power. Our path leads directly to the Sanctuaire Notre-Dame de Lumière, a historic pilgrimage site where legend says a shepherd discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary glowing with divine light. Since the 17th century, it has drawn seekers, healers, and mystics from across Provence and beyond. Here, we’ll take time for quiet reflection inside the sanctuary. You may light a candle, sit in stillness, or offer a written intention at the ancient altar. We’ll hold a short circle outside the chapel, honoring the sacred feminine and the light that guides our inner journey.

After lunch in Goult we continue toward the Forêt des Cèdres—an ancient cedar forest perched above the Luberon. These majestic trees, planted during Napoleon’s reign, stand like silent sentinels and hold deep, grounding energy. We’ll walk slowly through the forest, holding optional forest meditation or breathwork beneath the canopy.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Bonnieux, a village of artists and poets with terracotta roofs and sweeping views over the valley. Settle into your peaceful accommodations and enjoy a relaxed evening—whether that means dinner in town, journaling beneath the stars, or simply resting in the quiet that follows a meaningful day.

  • Sacred circle honoring the Divine Feminine

Today’s Theme: Completion & Sacred Integration
Walking Distance: ~14 km / Moderate

On this final full day of walking, we begin with a gentle morning ascent out of Bonnieux, moving through fields of thyme, dry stone walls, and fig trees heavy with fruit. There’s a feeling in the air today—of reverence, of softening, of completion.

Our first sacred stop is the village of Lacoste, steeped in mystique and contradiction. Most famously the onetime residence of the Marquis de Sade, Lacoste now serves as a strange yet powerful reminder of the dualities we hold within: shadow and light, desire and discipline, wildness and stillness. We’ll pause at the ruins of the château, letting the panoramic view open us to reflection and the complex beauty of the paths we’ve walked—both literal and symbolic.

From Lacoste, the trail follows olive groves and poppy-dotted meadows toward Ménerbes, one of Provence’s most poetic and contemplative hilltop villages. Before reaching the village, we’ll make an optional detour to the Dolmen de la Pitchoune, a Neolithic tomb site hidden among the trees. This ancient structure offers a grounding moment—an ancestral place of remembrance and reverence. We invite you to offer a private prayer, stone, or word of closure here, as a gesture of integration and thanks.

Upon arrival in Ménerbes, settle into your accommodations with time to shower, rest, and watch the late sun pour over the valley. In the early evening, we gather for our final closing circle, held in a peaceful garden or candle-lit indoor space. Here, we reflect on the journey, share the insights we’ve gathered, and honor the transformation this sacred walk has offered each of us.

Today’s Highlights

  • Walk from Bonnieux through the mystical village of Lacoste
  • Pause at the Château de Lacoste and reflect on dualities
  • Optional visit to the Dolmen de la Pitchoune
  • Arrival in Ménerbes and sunset over the valley
  • Closing circle to integrate and complete the journey

Included Meals: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

Tonight’s Hotel: TBD

Today’s Theme: Return with Grace
Walking Distance: Optional 3–4 km morning walk

The morning light over Ménerbes carries a different energy today—one of quiet completion. After six days of deep walking, shared stories, and spiritual reflection, we welcome the day not with urgency, but with softness. For those who wish, we’ll offer an optional early morning walk through the olive groves just below the village as the rising sun casts long golden rays across the valley. It’s a final opportunity to connect with the land, breathe in its memory, and offer gratitude for all that has been revealed.

After breakfast, we gather one last time for a closing ritual—a moment to honor not just the journey we’ve completed, but the one each traveler now carries within. Whether you feel transformed, grounded, stirred, or still in process, this space is for witnessing, blessing, and release.

Private transfers will be provided to Avignon TGV, Aix-en-Provence TGV, and Marseille Airport, coordinated to align with onward travel plans.

As we part ways, the invitation is simple: carry what you’ve discovered into your daily life, and let Provence continue to walk beside you—through memory, through stillness, through spirit.

Today’s Highlights

  • Optional morning walk through Ménerbes’ olive groves
  • Breakfast with the group
  • Final circle & blessing ritual
  • Included private transfers to Avignon, Aix, or Marseille

terms & conditions

International Flights

Please do not book your international flights until the journey has been confirmed and you’ve received the go-ahead from Ethos Journeys.

Check-in times and baggage allowances/restrictions vary by airline and can change anytime. For the most up-to-date information for your flight, please get in touch with your airline. We recommend checking in online in advance to avoid potential delays at the airport.

Travel Insurance – IMPORTANT & REQUIRED

Travel insurance is mandatory on all Ethos Journeys. We require that at a minimum you take a Travel Medical Insurance policy that covers you for travel medical expenses including emergency repatriation for the duration of your journey. However, we strongly advise that you consider a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Travel Insurance policy which should be taken as soon as you make your initial deposit.

What is the difference?

Travel Medical Insurance, also known as travel health insurance, is a short-term insurance designed to cover health care costs alone incurred outside of one’s home country. Covered costs could include expenses resulting from hospital room and board, an ambulance ride, emergency room care, surgery, and more. Depending on the particular policy, travel medical insurance may also include coverage for medical evacuation, political evacuation, terrorism, crisis response, natural disaster, accidental death and dismemberment, and/or repatriation of remains, among other benefits.

CFAR Travel Insurance is a short-term insurance which protects your financial investment in a trip—it often includes coverage for lost baggage, trip cancellation, trip interruption, and other losses incurred while traveling. Should your trip be cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason, a CFAR travel insurance policy will reimburse you for the eligible pre-paid and non-refundable portions of your trip. Depending on the policy, CFAR travel insurance will typically also reimburse you for costs resulting from unexpected medical expenses, travel delays and inconveniences, and lost, damaged, or stolen luggage.

Also please note that travelers frequently believe that their credit card company supplies travel insurance, but time and again, learn that only flight costs are covered, or there is a coverage limit. As such, we strongly encourage purchasing comprehensive CFAR insurance where you can obtain excellent coverage.

Transportation

On this journey, arrival and departure transport will be provided in an air-conditioned private car service.

Spending Money

Every traveler is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travelers may drink more than others while other travelers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping, and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.

Money Exchange

ATMs are found within main cities and generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if possible as while there is no hard and fast rule, some banks seem to only work with one brand of card.

Cash is recommended for times when ATMs are not accessible. Euros, British Pounds, and US Dollars are easy to exchange to local currency. Please note that you should bring some cash with you for emergency situations but carrying only cash is a high safety risk. ATM card/s and some cash is the ideal mix.

If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 1996, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often, we ask that you refer to the following website for daily exchange rates: www.xe.com

Health

There are no specific health requirements for this trip. However, we always recommend protection against typhoid, tetanus, infectious hepatitis, COVID-19 and polio. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information before departure. We recommend that you carry a First Aid kit, hand sanitizers / antibacterial wipes as well as any personal medical requirements.

Minimum Age

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied with Ethos Journeys. For minors traveling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.

OUR RESPONSE TO COVID-19

We are committed to safe and responsible travel, always ensuring our trips remain safe for everyone — our travelers, our leaders and crew, and the people we visit.

We believe vaccinations are crucial in saving lives and helping keep people safe. We support global vaccine equity and strongly encourage all travelers and leaders to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We also follow recommendations from the World Health Organization and the World Travel Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Safe Travel protocols.

1. Are there vaccination or testing requirements for Ethos Journeys trips?

Ethos Journeys does not require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for most trips. However, we strongly recommend that all travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others. Your destination country or airline may still require specific proof of testing or vaccination. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

2. What happens if someone on a trip shows symptoms of COVID-19?

If a traveler feels unwell during a trip, our Ethos Journeys leader will assist them in accessing medical care. This may include facilitating COVID-19 testing if requested by the customer. We also encourage customers to bring tests from home as a precaution. Any difficulties required or requested are at the traveler’s expense.

If travelers test positive for COVID-19, they must leave the trip and access medical care (if required). Depending on the destination, they may be required to isolate for a period of time.

Our goal is to keep the trip going wherever possible unless we are required to end the journey in line with local regulations.

3. Will I have to wear a mask when traveling?

Ethos Journeys supports the use of masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We follow local governments’ and individual businesses’ guidance and requirements around mask-wearing. Where masks aren’t required, we respect all travelers’ choices around personal mask usage.

4. Can I get a refund if I am unwell before my trip and unable to travel?
