Provence Pilgrimage

A village-to-village pilgrimage on foot through the heart of Provence

about the pilgrimage

There’s something deeply grounding about setting out for a journey on foot. When we slow down and give ourselves the time to move more slowly through the world, the simple act of walking becomes a way of returning to ourselves, to one another, and to the ground beneath our feet.

Autumn in Provence is an ideal place to enter into this rhythm. Ancient abbeys, forest paths, vineyard vistas, and hilltop villages offer the perfect backdrop for long reflective walks.

Our invitation is to join us on a different kind of pilgrimage—a gentle one that invites you to slow down, to see, to sense, and to feel all that surrounds you.

The seemingly mundane details of daily life in Provence hold a kind of magic that cannot be found anywhere else.”

ENCORE PROVENCE

Inspired by the Camino de Santiago

Our Pilgrimage in Provence is inspired by the Camino de Santiago, a path walked for centuries in search of meaning and renewal. The Luberon, in the heart of Provence, holds its own version of this timeless invitation.

In the cool October air, we’ll wander selected portions of the Luberon Loop, a scenic trail linking 27 hilltop villages across 140 miles. We’re choosing a few of the most beautiful stretches, creating a village-to-village journey through lavender fields, vineyards, oak forests, ochre cliffs, and ancient stone hamlets.

The Ingredients Are Simple

Walk, breathe, connect.

With ourselves, with each other, with Provence.

Laugh, converse, sip, eat, sleep.

Repeat.

The Spirit of the Journey

Like the Camino, but unlike traditional group tours, this retreat balances freedom with companionship. There’s no rigid “must-do” itinerary—we’ll lay the groundwork and guide the way, but much will be left to unfold naturally.

Charming upscale boutique accommodations will be arranged in villages along the way (Gordes, Bonnieux, & Lourmarin), chosen for their comfort and authenticity. Each day will entail a few hours of steady walking (10–15 km)—enough to feel challenged, yet not so much as to leave you too tired for the rest of the day. You should be in relatively fit condition. We will offer ample free time to explore villages, linger in a café, or rest under a tree.

Optional activities will be available—wine tastings, wellness (yoga, sound bath sessions), historical visits, and, of course, local markets for shopping! Evenings can be spent dining in company or enjoying your own quiet space. Two shared dinners are included, one of them a farewell gathering at Lydia and John’s home at Les Agnels.

Meet Your Guides

Lydia Dean

My husband John and I made Provence our home 25 years ago—it has been a love affair ever since. Over the years, Provence’s earthy fields have given us the fertile ground to plant the seeds of our life dreams. We raised our family here and began restoring old homes, living closer to the earth. The people of Provence, along with her stone, light, and mistral winds, have taught us much about a culture rooted in the rhythms of the land and seasons, as well as a slower, more respectful notion of time. Wanting to share this special region with others, we established Only Provence in 2007, a villa rental company that invites others to have their own beautiful experiences in Provence.

As our family and business grew, we were inspired to focus on restoration in broader ways— where access to basic needs and rights is so unfairly limited. We helped build both a foundation and a humanitarian travel company. For more than 10 years, I devoted myself to guiding philanthropic journeys, connecting globally minded people with courageous, lesser-known change-makers around the world. Travis joined in guiding these life-changing journeys, and together, we share a very special friendship and a profound sense of responsibility for guiding meaningful journeys.

Along the way, I wrote two books: Jumping the Picket Fence and Light Through the Cracks, which capture both the outer and inner transformations born from these rich life experiences. Through it all, Provence has woven her way into my life like a constant, steady thread.

In May of 2025, I completed the Camino de Santiago—an ancient 860 km pilgrimage across Spain. The five-week walk was a deeply personal journey, and I returned home inspired to discover and share the trails of Provence that I have come to know as sacred.

Travis Day

My life path has been shaped by a devotion to meaningful connection—with people, with place, and with purpose. Through extensive personal travel and my work designing and leading philanthropic journeys with Lydia, I’ve witnessed the profound exchange that happens when travel becomes service, and presence becomes prayer. From the indigenous villages of Guatemala to the highlands of Vietnam, each experience has deepened my belief that the most transformative journeys are those that bring us closer to the earth.

Travel has been both my teacher and mirror, revealing where I resist, where I expand, and how I belong. My commitment to soul work and the natural world is not something I step into for a retreat—it’s the rhythm that guides my days. The smell of wet soil after rain, the honest conversations shared between strangers, the quiet courage of those who are forced to rebuild—these are the moments that shape the journeys we now guide.

Through this Pilgrimage in Provence, we invite fellow travelers to explore not only the magical landscapes of southern France but also the sacred terrain within ourselves.

Your Daily Itinerary

Plan to arrive in Gordes in the afternoon, after traveling from either Marseille Airport or the Avignon TGV station—each about an hour away through the rolling hills of Provence. Taxis are readily available at both locations, or we can provide a trusted local contact to arrange a private transfer directly to your first accommodation.

Settle into your accommodation, a stunning stone hotel set within an olive grove, only a 20-minute walk from the center of Gordes. Take time to unwind and soak in the view—the sunlit stone houses, cypress trees, and the soft hum of village life below. As evening falls, wander through the narrow cobbled lanes before gathering with the group for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Overnight: Hôtel Le Jas de Gordes

Set out on foot after breakfast, following a scenic 2.5-hour trail to the Abbey of Sénanque. The path winds through forested slopes and open lavender fields, leading to the quiet valley where the 12th-century Cistercian abbey sits tucked between hills. After your visit, return to Gordes for a late lunch.

The afternoon is yours to explore—browse small boutiques, visit local galleries, or take in the panoramic views from the village’s stone terraces. As evening settles, gather for aperitifs in the garden, then wander to town for dinner.

Overnight: Hôtel Le Jas de Gordes
Includes: Breakfast, Sénanque Abbey Entrance

After breakfast, depart on foot toward Roussillon, a beautiful 2-3 hour walk through rolling countryside and herb-scented trails. The village’s ocre cliffs greet you in shades of red and gold. Enjoy lunch in the heart of Roussillon, then wander the famous Ochre Trail or explore the village boutiques.

Later in the afternoon, we will continue on foot to Coquillade Provence, an award-winning hotel and spa set amongst rolling hills and vineyards. Relax around the pool or indulge in a pre-dinner spa treatment.

Dine at any of the hotel’s restaurants (includes a Michelin-star restaurant) or get a quick taxi ride into the old Roman city of Apt.

Overnight: Coquillade Provence
Includes: Breakfast, Luggage Transfer

This morning begins with a short transfer from Roussillon to the ancient village of Saignon after breakfast. We will wander Saignon’s quiet squares, stone fountains, and panoramic viewpoints before setting out on foot toward Buoux. The trail meanders through fern-studded paths, rows of lavender, and through an ancient Druid dwelling. Sweeping views of the Luberon Valley follow us all along the way.

Pause for a picnic lunch in Buoux, a tiny village with a history dating back to Neolithic times. In the afternoon, continue walking toward Bonnieux, a hilltop village featuring steep, sloping streets, historic architecture, and panoramic views of valleys, vineyards, and neighboring villages.

We will stay at the lovely Capelongue Hotel for two nights, which has both a Michelin-starred restaurant and a well-known bistro. The hotel is only a minute’s walk from the center of the village. The evening is yours to unwind and explore Bonnieux.

Overnight: Capelongue Hotel & Spa
Includes: Breakfast, Luggage Transfer, Picnic Lunch

After breakfast, set out on a gentle 1.5-hour walk to Lacoste, once home to the Marquis de Sade and now beautifully restored by designer Pierre Cardin. Wander its cobbled lanes, soak in views toward Bonnieux, and rest your feet with a simple, Provençal lunch at Bistro La France.

In the afternoon, follow the trail toward Abbaye St. Hilaire to explore a medieval monastery tucked into the hills. We will continue to Bastide de Marie for a wine tasting amid vineyards and cypress trees.

Return to the hotel to rest before an evening at Lydia and John’s house in Les Agnels – a stone hamlet (a short 15 minutes from the hotel) that has been distilling lavender for hundreds of years. Over a chef-prepared meal, learn about the healing powers of lavender and about traditional, agricultural life in Provence. Return to the hotel after dinner.

Overnight: Capelongue Hotel & Spa
Includes: Breakfast, Wine Tasting, Lavender Distillery, Private Chef Dinner

Leave Bonnieux in the morning, walking the scenic route down into the valley and across gentle countryside toward Lourmarin. The trail offers vast, sweeping views—from vineyards and orchards to limestone cliffs, before opening into one of Provence’s most beloved villages. On the way into the village, stop by Fontvert winery for a tasting of some delicious local rosé.

Enjoy a lunch at any of Lourmarin’s lively local cafes, then spend the afternoon as you wish—browsing boutiques, visiting art galleries, or lingering at a café beneath the plane trees.

Settle into Le Moulin, a warm and inviting upscale boutique hotel right in the center of village life. In the evening, gather for dinner at L’Ormeau, a favorite local spot known for its warm hospitality and refined Provençal cooking.

Overnight: Le Moulin de Lourmarin
Includes: Breakfast, Luggage Transfer

Your final morning begins with the sights and sounds of one of the region’s most favored markets—a weekly ritual filled with local cheeses, olive oils, and textiles. It’s the perfect place to pick up a small memento of Provence or savor one last coffee at a café.

Transfer to Marseille Airport or Aix TGV station for departing flights or trains.

For those who wish to add an additional night in Lourmarin, an optional afternoon excursion to Château La Coste offers a memorable close to the journey—wandering among contemporary art installations, world-class architecture set amongst the vineyards.

Includes: Breakfast
Optional Overnight: Moulin de Lourmarin
Optional Inclusion: Chateau LaCoste

Summary of Optional Add-Ons:
• Spa Treatments at hotels
• Yoga in the mornings or afternoons at hotels
• Reservations at Michelin-starred restaurants (Bastide de Gordes, Coquillade, Moulin)

terms & conditions

International Flights

Please do not book your international flights until the journey has been confirmed and you’ve received the go-ahead from Ethos Journeys.

Check-in times and baggage allowances/restrictions vary by airline and can change anytime. For the most up-to-date information for your flight, please get in touch with your airline. We recommend checking in online in advance to avoid potential delays at the airport.

Travel Insurance – IMPORTANT & REQUIRED

Travel insurance is mandatory on all Ethos Journeys. We require that at a minimum you take a Travel Medical Insurance policy that covers you for travel medical expenses including emergency repatriation for the duration of your journey. However, we strongly advise that you consider a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Travel Insurance policy which should be taken as soon as you make your initial deposit.

What is the difference?

Travel Medical Insurance, also known as travel health insurance, is a short-term insurance designed to cover health care costs alone incurred outside of one’s home country. Covered costs could include expenses resulting from hospital room and board, an ambulance ride, emergency room care, surgery, and more. Depending on the particular policy, travel medical insurance may also include coverage for medical evacuation, political evacuation, terrorism, crisis response, natural disaster, accidental death and dismemberment, and/or repatriation of remains, among other benefits.

CFAR Travel Insurance is a short-term insurance which protects your financial investment in a trip—it often includes coverage for lost baggage, trip cancellation, trip interruption, and other losses incurred while traveling. Should your trip be cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason, a CFAR travel insurance policy will reimburse you for the eligible pre-paid and non-refundable portions of your trip. Depending on the policy, CFAR travel insurance will typically also reimburse you for costs resulting from unexpected medical expenses, travel delays and inconveniences, and lost, damaged, or stolen luggage.

Also please note that travelers frequently believe that their credit card company supplies travel insurance, but time and again, learn that only flight costs are covered, or there is a coverage limit. As such, we strongly encourage purchasing comprehensive CFAR insurance where you can obtain excellent coverage.

Transportation

On this journey, arrival and departure transport to/from Gordes is not provided, but can be easily arranged with a private driver or by taking a taxi. All transportation as part of the itinerary is included, as well as transport of luggage between villages as outlined in the itinerary.

Spending Money

Every traveler is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travelers may drink more than others while other travelers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping, and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.

Money Exchange

ATMs are found within main cities and generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if possible as while there is no hard and fast rule, some banks seem to only work with one brand of card.

Cash is recommended for times when ATMs are not accessible. Euros, British Pounds, and US Dollars are easy to exchange to local currency. Please note that you should bring some cash with you for emergency situations but carrying only cash is a high safety risk. ATM card/s and some cash is the ideal mix.

If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 1996, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often, we ask that you refer to the following website for daily exchange rates: www.xe.com

Health

There are no specific health requirements for this trip. However, we always recommend protection against typhoid, tetanus, infectious hepatitis, COVID-19, and polio. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information before departure. We recommend that you carry a First Aid kit, hand sanitizers / antibacterial wipes as well as any personal medical requirements.

Minimum Age

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied with Ethos Journeys. For minors traveling with a guardian over 21, the minimum age is 12.

We require that, at a minimum, you take a Travel Medical Insurance policy that covers you for travel-related medical expenses, including emergency repatriation, for the duration of your journey. However, we strongly advise that you consider a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Travel Insurance policy which should be taken as soon as you make your initial deposit.

Any adjustment will be based on the actual price of the services involved and not on a per diem basis. Adjustments will not be made for unused sightseeing trips or meals. Ethos Journeys will not accept any liability for any claims not received within 30 days of the termination of your travel program. All claims for days missed while traveling should be made in writing within 30 days of the program’s termination.

For verifiable claims to be considered, they must be submitted to Ethos Journeys in writing along with supporting documentation within 30 days of the traveler’s return date from our planned itinerary. Ethos Journeys will make every effort to rectify situations of services rendered below standard. In this case, any refund would be made based on the actual price of the service(s) in question and not on a per diem basis.

CHANGES

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ethos Journeys may need to make adjustments to the travel itinerary, which could alter the final price or design of your program. We will pass any additional cost (or savings) on to the traveler.

OUR RESPONSE TO COVID-19

We are committed to safe and responsible travel, always ensuring our trips remain safe for everyone — our travelers, our leaders and crew, and the people we visit.

We believe vaccinations are crucial in saving lives and helping keep people safe. We support global vaccine equity and strongly encourage all travelers and leaders to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We also follow recommendations from the World Health Organization and the World Travel Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Safe Travel protocols.

1. Are there vaccination or testing requirements for Ethos Journeys trips?

Ethos Journeys does not require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for most trips. However, we strongly recommend that all travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others. Your destination country or airline may still require specific proof of testing or vaccination. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

2. What happens if someone on a trip shows symptoms of COVID-19?

If a traveler feels unwell during a trip, our Ethos Journeys leader will assist them in accessing medical care. This may include facilitating COVID-19 testing if requested by the customer. We also encourage customers to bring tests from home as a precaution. Any difficulties required or requested are at the traveler’s expense.

If travelers test positive for COVID-19, they must leave the trip and access medical care (if required). Depending on the destination, they may be required to isolate for a period of time.

Our goal is to keep the trip going wherever possible unless we are required to end the journey in line with local regulations.

3. Will I have to wear a mask when traveling?

Ethos Journeys supports the use of masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We follow local governments’ and individual businesses’ guidance and requirements around mask-wearing. Where masks aren’t required, we respect all travelers’ choices around personal mask usage.

4. Can I get a refund if I am unwell before my trip and unable to travel?

If you are unwell before traveling, please contact us to make alternative arrangements. We strongly encourage arranging travel insurance for your journey as soon as you deposit and/or buy flights. You can receive a full refund from your travel insurance provider in most circumstances.

AIR TRANSPORTATION
