“A small country that’s big on hospitality, ancient history, and culture – with numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites – Jordan offers endless opportunities for adventure.”
LONELY PLANET
“It may be hard to believe, but the stars shine even brighter in Wadi Rum. It’s the bold gateway into the Arabian Desert, with flowing dunes, sandstone arches, and table mountains that seem to poke straight up from the flame-colored sand.”

9 day itinerary
TONIGHT’S HOTEL: Intercontinental Amman – An iconic landmark in bustling Amman, InterContinental Jordan Hotel offers cosmopolitan amenities with a Middle Eastern touch, from light-filled rooms, vibrant furnishings and sweeping architecture to international cuisines, Spa facilities, a selection of beautiful spaces suitable for different occasions, along with magnificent views. Located atop one of the seven hills of Amman, the hotel attracts international clientele from all over the world who enjoy its close proximity to the city center.
MEALS INCLUDED: Dinner
Next, we will continue to Umm Qais (Gadara), a picturesque black-basalt Roman city of the Decapolis with panoramic views over the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights, before sharing lunch at the Anjara Women’s Cooperative Society, an organization empowering rural women in Jordan.
After returning to Amman, we will enjoy a delightful dinner at Hashem, a veritable Ammani institution and one of the oldest restaurants in the capital, much revered for its no-nonsense philosophy and simple, hearty food. Hashem Restaurant has no menu, but they serve delicious dishes that even the Royal Family is known to enjoy, proclaiming it the “best falafel in the country.”
MEALS INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Leaving Amman after breakfast, we will stop first at Mount Nebo, the site from which Moses saw the Promised Land. Having led the Israelites for 40 years through the wilderness, Moses finally saw them from this breathtaking vantage point. This amazing panorama includes the Jordan River Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho, and the spires and domes of the Mt. of Olives and Bethlehem on the Judean hills just across the wide valley.
During our drive, our next port of call is Umm ar-Rasas, one of Jordan’s World Heritage sites and an essential stop on the once-busy caravan routes. The impressive mosaic floor of the St. Stephen Church features medallions commemorating all the early Christian pilgrimage sites of the region, and the extensive ruins also include one of the area’s earliest Stylite towers, where a Byzantine hermit lived atop the tower and preached to the pilgrimage visitors.
MEALS INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch
However, Petra’s magic is more than just the beauty of its individual buildings. It’s the entire setting that is unforgettable, with the carved facades of classical columns flush with the walls of sandstone cliffs, creating “a rose-red city, half as old as time,” to borrow the words from “Petra,” a poem by the 19th-century English writer John Burgon.
After a full morning exploring the wonders of Pedra, we will return to the hotel for lunch and a few hours of relaxation. In the late afternoon we will venture out to Little Petra, where we will share in a Bedouin Dinner Party.
TONIGHT’S HOTEL: Old Village Resort Petra
MEALS INCLUDED: Breakfast, Dinner
TONIGHT’S HOTEL: Memories Aicha Bedouin Camp – We’ve seen a fair share of luxury campsites in Wadi Rum, but Memories Aicha is truly unique. Bordered by rugged mountains and the stunning Arabian desert, this camp lets you wake up in the wild outdoors without compromising an ounce of luxury. Expect the same amenities and facilities as you would have in a top-class hotel. Junior Tents (375 sq.ft.) are equipped with a King Bed or two Twin Beds and can comfortably accommodate two guests. All tents have en-suite bathrooms and showers, air conditioning, slippers, bathrobe, and bottled mineral water.
MEALS INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Spend your morning taking in the splendor of the desert, or participate in some optional tours (additional costs depend on the choice of tours) like dune-surfing, riding camels, or shepherding in the desert.
Later in the day, we will visit a Bedouin family to enjoy Zarb/Mandi. A mix of meat, like lamb and chicken, rice, onions, and carrots, is placed in a square hole in the ground, which is filled with flaming hot coals. The hole is then covered with a few layers of blankets to hold in the heat, and finally, sand is covered over the oven. After a few hours, the meat and rice are all smoked, steamed, and grilled, all at the same time. Like most Jordanian dishes, it is served family style. (Vegetarian options are also available.)
In the evening return to camp for another delightful dinner at Memories Aicha.
TONIGHT’S HOTEL: Memories Aicha
MEALS INCLUDED: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today after breakfast, we will start making our way to the Dead Sea.
The lowest point on the earth’s surface at more than 400m below sea level, the Dead Sea is a natural phenomenon and high on most travelers’ bucket lists. Lucky for us, we have two days here to while away the time bobbing in mineral-rich buoyant waters and lathering up with a detoxifying mud bath, or enjoy spa treatments and optional tours.
TONIGHT’S HOTEL: Mövenpick Dead Sea Resort – This peaceful hotel is located in a traditional village, nestled amongst lush gardens. The resort is set on the northern shores of the Dead Sea, at the lowest point on earth. With your well-being and balance in mind, this 5-star resort is an oasis of tranquillity. Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea offers nine trendy restaurants and bars on the Dead Sea. Explore a delectable variety of cuisines catering to all tastes.
Relax in the award-winning Arabian Dead Sea Zara Spa with breath-taking views of the healing waters and offering world-class facilities on 6,000 square meters – you can be sure to experience ultimate spa luxury.

Visit to learn more: https://www.saficrafts.org/
The Lowest Point on Earth Museum & Lot’s Cave
This small museum near the Dead Sea is a wonder in and of itself with its unique location and exciting collection of artifacts. Located at the lowest point on Earth, the museum hosts an array of materials from Lot’s cave (located just up the hill from the museum) and amazingly preserved Greco-Roman clothing, in addition to hundreds of Greek inscriptions. While visiting the museum, the walk up to Lot’s cave is
highly recommended. This cave is believed to be where the Prophet Lot escaped following the story of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Detailed Trip Notes
REGIONAL INFORMATION
Official Languages: Arabic, English (secondary to Arabic)
Religions: Muslim 94%, Christian 5%
Time Zone: GMT +2 | US EST +7
Electricity: 220 Volts, 50 AC
Currency: Jordanian Dinar (JOD)
International Dialing Code: 00962
Climate: The climate depends on which part of the country you are in, as altitude ranges from 400m (1312ft) below average sea level at the Dead Sea, to 1850m above sea level at the Al-Shirah mountains. June to September are the hottest months of the year where temperature rises to about 32C (89.6F). The period between December and March is the coolest. Snowfall often occurs and temperatures stay around 15C (59F) during the day.
Spending Money
Every traveler is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travelers may drink more than others while other travelers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping, and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.
Money Exchange
The currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD).
ATMs are found within Jordan’s main cities and generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if possible as while there is no hard and fast rule, some banks seem to only work with one brand of card.
Cash is recommended for times when ATMs are not accessible. Euros, British Pounds, and US Dollars are easy to exchange to local currency. Please note that you should bring some cash with you for emergency situations but carrying only cash is a high safety risk. ATM card/s and some cash is the ideal mix.
If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 1996, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!
As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often, we ask that you refer to the following website for daily exchange rates: www.xe.com
Health
DRINKING WATER: It is advisable to drink bottled water in Jordan.
There are no specific health requirements for this trip. However, we recommend protection against typhoid, tetanus, infectious hepatitis, and polio. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information before departure. We recommend that you carry a First Aid kit, hand sanitizers / antibacterial wipes as well as any personal medical requirements.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory to participate in any of our journeys. When traveling on a group trip, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance has been sighted by your leader, who will take note of your insurance details. When selecting a travel insurance policy, we require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation. A minimum coverage of USD200,000 is required.
We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, loss of luggage, and personal effects.
If you have credit card insurance, we require proof of trip purchase (a receipt of credit card statement) with a credit card in your name. Contact your bank for details of their participating insurer, the level of coverage, and emergency contact telephone number.
Local Dress
While visiting mosques and other religious monuments, you should dress modestly, cover your shoulders, and you shouldn’t wear short shorts or skirts. Outside of capital cities and the more tourist centers, local dress is often more conservative. As a matter of respect, we ask that both men and women are aware of this and recommend loose-fitting clothes with your shoulders covered.
To respect the Islamic culture in Jordan and to honor your gracious hosts, women should cover from shoulders to knees. Mid-calf pants and skirts with short-sleeved tops are excellent options for this.
When visiting mosques, long sleeves and a scarf to cover your head is mandatory. They can be removed once you leave the mosque grounds.
Minimum Age
You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied with Ethos Journeys. For minors traveling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.

MEMOIRS & BIOGRAPHIES ABOUT LIFE IN JORDAN
Our Last Best Chance: A Story of War and Peace by King Abdullah II of Jordan
This book is primarily a memoir of King Abdullah’s life. He paints a picture of the Middle East’s issues from an insider’s perspective and gives enough geopolitical details for those with a Western view of the world to understand. While the book does focus a fair amount on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it also covers the King’s sudden rise to the throne and Jordan’s role as the stable power in the region.
A Leap of Faith by Queen Noor
A Leap of Faith is Queen Noor’s memoir. In this compelling book, Arab-American Lisa Halaby opens up to tell her love story with King Hussein of Jordan. The tale unveils their love affair and the turbulent transformation the Middle East was experiencing with the formation of the state of Israel in 1948. Her memoir does an excellent job of weaving together history, political commentary, and the richness of family life.
Married to a Bedouin by Marguerite van Geldermalsen
Married to a Bedouin is another memoir about a woman in love who leaves behind her life to follow her husband in Jordanian land. Marguerite van Geldermalsen is a Dutch woman raised in New Zealand. She was traveling through Petra in 1978 when she met Bedouin Mohammad Abdallah Othman. After falling deeply in love with the charming Bedouin, she leaves New Zealand to move into her husband’s caves.
The Land Beyond: A Thousand Miles on Foot through the Heart of the Middle East by Leon McCarron
Leon McCarron did what only a few dared to do. He walked alone through the Middle East on a 1000-mile walk from Jerusalem to Mount Sinai. The memoir shares his journey along the trails and pilgrimage routes that crisscross the West Bank, Palestine, and Jordan. The walkthrough of these congested areas leads him to meet different people and understand the historical events, cultures, and religions that shaped the Holy Land.
Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell
While T.E. Lawrence takes the spotlight on Jordanian adventures, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to get to know Gertrude Bell through this book. A bold woman, Bell abandoned her Victorian Life to let her curiosity and adventurous spirit run free in the Middle East. She played a key role in creating the Middle East as we know it today, and her connections and work provided much of the brain for T. E. Lawrence’s military brawn.
FICTION SET IN JORDAN
Pillars of Salt by Fadia Faqir
Pillars of Salt is one of the best books about Jordan and the Muslim culture from a feminine perspective. Fadia Faqir tells the story of a young Bedouin and an older Amman woman sharing a room in a mental hospital. The two women become closer and share the events that led them to end up in a psychiatric ward. Through each story the characters share, the book gives deep insight into the Muslim culture, the role of women, and the challenges they face in a patriarchic society.
FILMS & VIDEOS
- Saladin (1963), by Youssef Chahine
- In the twelfth century, he was the sultan who victoriously led the Muslim armies against the Crusaders, managing in 1187 to retake Jerusalem.
- Theeb (2014), by Naji Abu Nuwar
- Hedjaz, 1916, under British rule. In a Bedouin camp, in the heart of the desert, the young 10-year-old Theeb lives with his older brother Hussein, who passes on the ancestral traditions to him.
- Lawrence of Arabia (1962-1963), by David Lean
- The somewhat magnified biopic of the enigmatic and atypical T.E. Lawrence. In 1916-1917, this young British officer helped to lift an Arab revolt against the Turkish occupier.
- Indiana Jones and the last crusade (1989), by Steven Spielberg
- What does it have to do with your stay in Jordan? Petra, of course!
- The Martian (2015), by Ridley Scott
- Ridley Scott has clearly fallen in love with Jordan since this is his fourth film having a direct relationship with the country. What does it have to do with your stay in Jordan? Wadi Rum, in all its authenticity and splendor.

If you leave a trip for any reason after it has commenced, we are not obliged to make any refunds for unused services. Ethos Journeys will make every effort to rectify situations of services rendered below standard. In this case, any refund would be made based on the actual price of the service(s) in question and not on a per diem basis.
If Ethos Journeys or its contracted partners cannot provide part or all of the travel itinerary, see Changes below.
CHANGES
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ethos Journeys may need to make adjustments to the travel itinerary, which could alter the final price or design of your program. We will pass any additional cost (or savings) on to the traveler.
OUR RESPONSE TO COVID-19
We are committed to safe and responsible travel, always ensuring our trips remain safe for everyone — our travelers, our leaders and crew, and the people we visit.
We believe vaccinations are crucial in saving lives and helping keep people safe. We support global vaccine equity and strongly encourage all travelers and leaders to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We also follow recommendations from the World Health Organization and the World Travel Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Safe Travel protocols.
1. Are there vaccination or testing requirements for Ethos Journeys trips?
Ethos Journeys does not require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for most trips. However, we strongly recommend that all travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others. Your destination country or airline may still require specific proof of testing or vaccination. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
2. What happens if someone on a trip shows symptoms of COVID-19?
If a traveler feels unwell during a trip, our Ethos Journeys leader will assist them in accessing medical care. This may include facilitating COVID-19 testing if requested by the customer. We also encourage customers to bring tests from home as a precaution. Any difficulties required or requested are at the traveler’s expense.
If travelers test positive for COVID-19, they must leave the trip and access medical care (if required). Depending on the destination, they may be required to isolate for a period of time.
Our goal is to keep the trip going wherever possible unless we are required to end the journey in line with local regulations.
3. Will I have to wear a mask when traveling?
Ethos Journeys supports the use of masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We follow local governments’ and individual businesses’ guidance and requirements around mask-wearing. Where masks aren’t required, we respect all travelers’ choices around personal mask usage.
4. Can I get a refund if I am unwell before my trip and unable to travel?
If you are unwell before traveling, please contact us to make alternative arrangements. We strongly encourage arranging travel insurance for your journey as soon as you deposit and/or buy flights. You can receive a full refund from your travel insurance provider in most circumstances, but our cancellation policies cannot be altered in the event of illness.
HOTEL CHECK-IN & CHECK-OUT
Hotel check-out time is usually 12:00 PM. Extended check-in/check-out time may be granted, subject to availability and agreement by the participating hotels.
PASSPORTS, VISAS & OTHER TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
Be sure your passport is not close to expiring as some countries refuse valid passports soon to expire – generally, travel within six months of expiration will not be accepted. It is the travelers’ responsibility to ensure that they have valid passports and visas, where necessary. Ethos Journeys cannot be held responsible for information on visa regulations or where passports or visas are not obtained or accepted by local authorities.
AIR TRANSPORTATION
Ethos Journeys does not book airfare to and from the travel destination. Once the traveler confirms the travel itinerary, he/she is responsible for ensuring correct arrival and departure dates/times.
